Member Rules & Guidelines

COVID-19 GUIDELINES (UPDATED AS OF JAN 2021):

  • Use Common Sense!
  • NO visitors or non-members allowed to enter at this time
  • Please do not come to Rust Temple if you are sick, have been sick, or have been in contact with someone who is sick over the last 14 days.

WHILE AT RUST TEMPLE:

  • You must wear a surgical or cloth mask AT ALL TIMES inside Rust Temple / the building (no gators nor bandanas)
  • Remain 6 FEET OR MORE APART from others at all times
  • Sign In & Out at the sign-in station upon entering/leaving & sanitize the pen (this is for contact tracing)
  • Disinfect the lock, key, door handles, and light switches after touching
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap for min 20 seconds frequently while at Rust Temple
  • No more than 10 people inside Rust Temple at any time (if at any point Rust Temple becomes too busy we may implement an on-day off-day schedule for members to keep distant)
  • Workshop spaces limited to 1 or 2 people at a time, as long as 6 feet or more distance can be maintained (sanitize tools after use)
  • Crow’s Nest and Town Square are limited to 1 person at a time

>>> NO hard drugs allowed in the space! NO smoking or vaping inside. Alcohol (and caffeine if you want to get specific) are the only drugs permitted to be consumed inside.

>>> Non-member visitors, including partners or friends of members, cannot just come in and use a tool or the shop spaces without a shop membership – liability waivers and membership fees as insurance for tool replacement are necessary.

>>> All Trash & Recycling is PACK-IN PACK-OUT. All members are responsible for their own trash, including unwanted furniture and unusable scrap wood. There are trash & recycling dumpsters just outside the building — ask if you need directions.

>>> NO leaving personal items in common spaces — ie. Town Square and Crow’s Nest. You can work on projects in those spaces if they’re not particularly messy, but pack-in-pack out and be cognizant of the space you’re taking up in there, so others can feel they have equal ability to use it. Undertakers are advised to put personal items left in these spaces in the LOST AND FOUND bin by the door to be claimed, so if you forgot, check there first. If you’re adding decorations for the space, that is encouraged.

>>> KEEP FIRE LANES AND RED-OUTLINED WALKWAYS CLEAR AT ALL TIMES! These are our evacuation routes in case we all need to get the fuck out for whatever reason. They’re also marked on the floorplan drawing by the door.

>>> NO sanding, staining, or doing stuff causing noxious fumes in your space without proper ventilation or enclosing your space first. Sanding is okay in the woodshop, but be cognizant of the amount of debris you’re causing and take breaks for the sake of those around you. If you need to use some really nasty chemicals you should check with an undertaker before going ahead with it.

>>> In general, be an active participant in keeping it clean for everyone. If you see a mess, especially in the shared spaces (woodshop/ metalshop/ screenshop/ sewing area/ kitchen/ bathroom/ sink/ town square/ crow’s nest) take a sec to clean it up.

Building Rules

>>> Absolutely no sleeping in the space or in the building.

>>> You can use the push cart on the first floor so long as it is returned to the first floor.

>>> No propane in the space.

>>> No electric frying pans.

>>> No stove tops, electric or gas powered.

>>> No painting or altering of exterior walls/door without landlords approval

Parking Rules

>>> No Parking in front of the loading docks unless loading or unloading with them.

>>> No overnight parking.

>>> You can’t leave anything in the parkinglot overnight.

= Medium public version =

Rust Temple is dedicated to providing a harassment-free space for all members, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of Rust Temple members or their invited guests in any form. Anyone who violates these rules will be asked to leave at the discretion of the Rust Temple organizers (also known as Undertakers).

= Long public version =

Rust Temple is dedicated to providing a harassment-free space for all members, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of Rust Temple members or their invited guests in any form. Anyone who violates these rules will be asked to leave at the discretion of the Rust Temple organizers (also known as Undertakers).

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Verbal harassment disparaging people by gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, or religion.
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following.
  • Harassing photography or recording.
  • Sustained disruption of meetings or other events.
  • Inappropriate physical contact.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention.
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.

== Enforcement ==

Individuals asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If an individual engages in harassing behavior, Undertakers retain the right to take any actions to keep the Rust Temple a welcoming environment for all members and their invited guests. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the premises.

Undertakers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the Rust Temple or making the environment hostile for any member or their invited guests.

We expect members and their invited guests to follow these rules within the Rust Temple and while participating in any related social activities.

== Reporting ==

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. Harassment reduces the value of the Rust Temple for everyone.

You can make a report either personally or anonymously.

=== Anonymous report ===

You can make an anonymous report by sending an email to hq@rusttemple,today. You can use an anonymous email service like http://anonymouse.org.

We can’t follow up on anonymous reports with you directly, but we will fully investigate it and take whatever action is necessary to prevent a recurrence.

=== Personal report ===

You can make a personal report by sending an email to hq@rusttemple.today or by contacting any Undertaker.

When taking a personal report, the Undertaker will ensure you are safe and cannot be overheard. They may involve other Undertakers to ensure your report is managed properly. Once safe, we’ll ask you to tell us about what happened. This can be upsetting, but we’ll handle it as respectfully as possible, and you can bring someone to support you. You won’t be asked to confront anyone and we won’t tell anyone who you are.

== Warnings ==

Any Undertaker can issue a verbal warning to an individual if their behavior violates the Rust Temple’s anti-harassment policy. Warnings should be reported to hq@rusttemple.today as soon as practical.

Your report should include:

  • The name or a description of the individual.
  • The time you issued the warning.
  • The behavior that was in violation.
  • The approximate time of the behavior (if different than the time of warning).
  • The circumstances surrounding the incident.
  • Your identity.
  • Other people involved in the incident.

== Events ==

Meetings or similar events should not necessarily be stopped for one-time gaffes or minor problems, although an Undertaker should speak to any individuals afterward as needed. However, an Undertaker should take immediate action to politely and calmly stop any meeting or event that repeatedly or seriously violates the anti-harassment policy. You don’t need to provide any further explanation in the moment, but you should make a report soon after.

== Screening ==

The Rust Temple is for members and their guests. We live in a small community, and there are people who have suffered abuse at the hands of somebody still living nearby.

Before a new member joins Rust Temple, existing members will be notified with the potential new member’s name and a short introduction. That way existing members have a window of time to know about new people who may be joining the space.

To prevent abusive individuals from entering the space, either as guests or as potential new members, any member may request that a specific guest not be allowed within Rust Temple.

== Taking reports ==

When taking a report from someone experiencing harassment you should record what they say and reassure them that they are being taken seriously, but avoid making specific promises about what actions will be taken.

Ask for any other information if the reporter has not volunteered it (such as time, place) but do not pressure them to provide it if they are reluctant. Even if the report lacks important details, such as the identity of the person making the harassing actions, it should still be recorded and passed along.

If the reporter desires it, help them arrange for an escort by a trusted person, have them contact a friend for support or assistance, or assist them with contacting local law enforcement when appropriate. Do not pressure the reporter to take any action that they do not want to take.

Respect the reporter’s privacy by not sharing unnecessary details with others, especially individuals who were not involved with the situation.

Your report should include:

  • The name of the member giving the report.
  • The name or a description of the harassing individual.
  • The time you took the report.
  • The behavior that was in violation.
  • The approximate time of the behavior.
  • The circumstances surrounding the incident.
  • Your identity.
  • Other people involved in the incident.

Email your report to hq@rusttemple.today.

== Expulsion ==

An individual may be expelled by the decision of any Undertaker for whatever reasons they deem sufficient. However, here are some general guidelines for when someone should be expelled:

  • A second offense resulting in an Undertaker warning.
  • Continuing to harass after any “No” or “Stop” instruction.
  • A pattern of harassing behavior, with or without warnings.
  • A single serious or obviously intentional offense.
  • If an existing member has requested that someone not be allowed to enter the space.

== Public statements ==

As a general rule, Undertakers should not make any public statements about the behavior of any individuals involved in an incident of harassment.

In general, consult with other Undertakers when possible, but act when necessary.
